WMTA
Arts Awareness and Advocacy

Mission

To advance and administer the advocacy efforts of the Association at the local and state levels and to recommend advocacy policy to the WMTA Executive Board.

The Wisconsin Music Teachers Association's Arts Awareness and Advocacy program acts as a source of information regarding the status of music and the arts in Wisconsin public schools.  The state chairperson can direct communities needing help and support to people who have had similar experiences.

Wisconsin MTA AAA chair also maintains a library of resource material available from music organizations such as MENC, WMEA and the Wisconsin Coalition.

In 2005, Wisconsin MTA Advocacy Program led a "Teachers Helping Teachers" disaster relief campaign, raising thousands of dollars in music instruments, books and cash which was sent to our fellow MTA members in the hurricane affected region of  Louisiana.

The Wisconsin Music Teachers Association is also a member of the Wisconsin Consortium for Music Education.  Formed in 2004, the associations share a mutual concern over many issues, such as the overall reduction of school music programs and decline in music teacher availability due to continual budget reductions. Other topics of concern include federal mandates in "No Child Left Behind" that limit the amount of time devoted to electives because of the increased time necessary to prepare students for testing in other core curriculum areas.

With these challenging issues facing music education, the group of associations has formed an information-sharing network called the Wisconsin Consortium for Music Education. It is focused on advocating for music education while also providing support for music teachers in the field and college students interested in becoming music teachers.
