INTERMEDIATE C TEST

(Each level will include all the information on previous levels)

I. NOTE NAME IDENTIFICATION

Pitches involving a maximum of three ledger lines between treble staff and bass staff and four ledger lines above or below the grand staff.

IV. INTERVALS

  1. Identify all major and minor 2nds and 3rds.
  2. Identify major and minor 6ths and 7ths above C, G, D, F, B flat.

VI. CHORDS

  1. Identify or write major and minor triads in root position.
  2. Identify or write a complete V7 (in root position).
  3. Identify or write root position triads as they function in a major key of no more than 3 sharps or 3 flats.
  4. Identify the above chords appearing as broken chords or chords outlined within a melody. 

PLEASE NOTE:  When writing chords, students may be asked to provide key signatures and/or accidentals as needed.

VII.  KEY SIGNATURES

  1. Identify the key of major and minor musical examples (all examples will end on the tonic and minor keys will use the raised 7th).
  2. Write major key signatures through four sharps and four flats.
  3. Write minor key signatures through two sharps and two flats.
  4. Write major key signatures through three sharps and three flats.

VIII.  FORM 

  1. Sonata-Allegro Form--exposition, development, recapitulation

IX.  TRANSPOSITION

Melody beginning on note other than the tonic, in major keys through four sharps and four flats.

X.  STYLE PERIODS

  1. Baroque - 1600-1750
  2. Classic - 1750-1820
  3. Romantic - 1820-1900
  4. Twentieth Century - after 1900

AURAL

  1. Identify whether a short performed example is in major or minor key.
  2. Identify ascending 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths and 8ths played above the same tonic in a major key.
