Composer Commissioning Project

Our Mission...

  • To further the art of music through programs that encourage and support music teaching, performance, composition and research.

WMTA and MTNA are jointly dedicated to encouraging the creation of new works by Wisconsin composers and annually assists  in the generation and performance of new music through the national composers commissioning program. A newly commissioned composition receives its premiere performance at the WMTA conference.

To further promote and recognize outstanding contributions to American Music, MTNA has its state affiliates submit their commissioned works to a panel of recognized composers for selection of the MTNA-Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year.  Each commissioned piece is automatically entered into MTNA's national competition.  The new work of the selected composer is presented in a concert performance at the next MTNA National Conference, and the composer is proclaimed the MTNA-Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year.  There is also a generous cash award presented to the composer.

In terms of the WMTA Composer Commissioning program, a commission is for the successful creation of a new musical work, for which WMTA will pay a commission fee, and MTNA will match those funds.  A commission is not a prize for an extant composition; rather, it is meaningful encouragement for a recognized composer to create a new musical work after formal agreement is reached.

Information about the MTNA Composer Commissioning program also can be found on the MTNA website at http://www.mtna.org
