"Where Musicians Count"
President: Judy Meyer ANNUAL LOCAL ASSOCIATION DUES: $10.00
The Stevens Point Area Music Teachers Association (SPAMTA) adopted a constitution and became affiliated with the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association on October 19, 1983. The constitution stated SPAMTA's purpose:
"to promote professional fraternity among music teachers, to stimulate professional growth among music teachers, to encourage high standards in music instruction."
The first President of SPAMTA was Martha Thomas. In January 2000, SPAMTA revised their constitution to receive official recognition as a non-profit charitable organization.
SPAMTA serves the communities of Stevens Point, Waupaca and Wisconsin Rapids. Meetings are conducted during the school year, on the second Wednesday of each month, with most meetings held at Mitchell Piano Works of Stevens Point. New members are always welcome to attend.
The primary goal of SPAMTA is encourage our students and community through the arts. One annual student event is our Fall Classical Music Festival, whereupon students receive an introductory experience to audition techniques. There is honors recital held at the end of the day for students receiving a superior score in their auditions. Another event is "Piano Day" conducted annually by members of the UW-Stevens Point Music Department faculty. This event, primarily for high school students, provides the student with individual mini lessons with a faculty member, with workshops and video presentations held during the daylong event. In 1999, SPAMTA received an MTNA Foundation Grant and a WMTA Foundation Grant for our "Meet the Composer Series" concerts (Alfred Publishing Company composers Martha Mier, Joyce Grill and FJH Music composer, Melody Bober). In the past, SPAMTA students and their teachers have also participated in benefit recitals in the Stevens Point area. SPAMTA also provides two student recognition awards: 1) an annual college scholarship to a local graduating high school senior who has been accepted into a music degree program at a four-year college or university, and 2)a cash award to graduating high school seniors of SPAMTA teachers who have participated in lessons throughout all four years of high school.
